Beach

Tangalle Beach

One of Sri Lanka's most iconic southern beaches, Tangalle stretches in a wide arc of pale sand flanked by rocky headlands and swaying palms. The sea here is calm enough for swimming in season, and the old Dutch fort ruins add a touch of colonial history to a leisurely afternoon walk. The town's small harbour is alive at dawn when fishing boats return — a sight as beautiful as any safari.

Best time: Nov – Apr (calm seas)

Wildlife

Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary

One of Sri Lanka's most important nesting beaches, Rekawa hosts five species of sea turtle between November and April. Evening guided walks let you witness nesting females and hatchlings in a low-impact, community-managed setting a perfect companion to your eco experience at Kalametiya.

Hummanaya Blowhole

Asia's second-largest blowhole sends columns of seawater shooting 25 metres into the air when the tide pushes waves through submerged volcanic rock channels. At its most spectacular during rough seas, this natural phenomenon is unlike anything else on the island raw coastal geology at its most dramatic.

Best time: May – Sep (rough surf)

Beach

45 km · ~55 min

Weligama Bay

A sweeping crescent bay famous for its stilt fishermen, men who balance on wooden poles driven into the seabed, fishing in silence. The bay is also Sri Lanka's most accessible surf spot, with gentle waves perfect for beginners. A lively town promenade and excellent seafood restaurants complete the picture.

Best time: Nov – Apr (best surf & fishing)
